IGP Cautions Against Filming Police, Risks Security Efforts

June 1, 2026 - 4 views

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to the public and media regarding the indiscriminate filming of police officers. He emphasized that such actions could undermine security efforts and erode the morale of officers on duty.

Impact on Security Operations

In recent times, the prevalence of bystanders and media personnel capturing videos of police operations has raised concerns. The IGP highlighted that while transparency is vital, it is essential to balance it with the need for operational security. He stated, "Filming police in the line of duty can expose our officers to unnecessary risks and may compromise ongoing investigations. We must prioritize safety over sensationalism."

Public Awareness Campaign

To address this issue, the police force plans to launch a public awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens about the potential dangers of filming police activities. Disu urged Nigerians to support law enforcement efforts by being vigilant and responsible in their actions.

“We encourage the public to report any incidents or suspicious activities instead of filming them. Our officers are dedicated to maintaining peace and security, and they need the public's cooperation.

Media's Role in Safety

The IGP also called on media practitioners to uphold their ethical responsibilities. He underscored the importance of responsible reporting, stating that it plays a critical role in shaping public perception and ensuring the safety of both officers and civilians. "We rely on the media to disseminate accurate information and foster a sense of community trust in law enforcement," he added.

Conclusion

As Nigeria continues to face various security challenges, the IGP's warning serves as a crucial reminder of the delicate balance between transparency and safety. Engaging with the police in a constructive manner, rather than through indiscriminate filming, is essential for nurturing a secure environment for everyone.
